VIOLIN STUDY: A GUIDE TO PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL VIOLIN DEVELOPMENT
(Michael Dabroski - September 2006)
INTRODUCTION
My primary violin teaching goal is to provide the highest quality of technical violin training available while simultaneously nurturing a student’s love of music. Whether a student’s focus is casual or serious, s/he will benefit greatly by combining musical passion with hands-on learning. Whether an individual’s violin playing goal is short or long term, a child’s or adult’s, amateur or professional and regardless of musical style, I have found that connecting one’s emotional experience of music with excellent technique creates the most progress and satisfaction for my students.
My most rewarding teaching experiences involve dedicated violin students who achieve a balance between loving music and following a simple violin instructional guide. These students experience the raw emotion and passion involved with creating music on the violin, have fun, and socialize with peers through music while simultaneously they learn to use technical exercises and think critically about their music and ability to progress.
Most often I have found that regardless of age or ability, progress is linked to this combination of emotional connection to music and dedication to fulfilling assignments. Being able to practice in a supportive environment without distraction enables the student time to create music and begin a critical self-analysis which quickly leads to improvement.
With this in mind, and knowing that violin teaching requires continuous and clear explanation, I have put together this written method (a work in progress) to establish my teaching standards for beginners on up to experienced violin students.
My violin career began with the Suzuki Violin Method when I was 5 years old. I attended weekend community music schools in middle and high school. I went on to complete undergraduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music in 1993 and graduate studies at Temple University in 1995, while participating in leading summer music festivals throughout the United States. My own passion for music led me to the Adirondacks for ten years, where I founded and developed a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing chamber music to rural communities. Here I was able to hone my teaching style, perform music I love, and create hundreds of musical opportunities for people who otherwise would not have access to chamber music.
Love, music and family brought me to Vermont in 2005. I am privileged to be a part of such a dynamic and music-loving community. I look forward to working with you.
